Mahendra Singh Dhoni is all set to don Jharkhand jersey in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, a limited-overs domestic one-day, in 2015-16.
The swashbuckling batsman has already given his consent to senior officials of Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA).
JSCA secretary Rajesh Verma told The Telegraph that Captain Cool would play for Jharkhand in the one-day ties. "Dhoni has given his nod," Verma said.
However, the skipper's chances of playing the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament are slim, as he will lead India in the one-day series against Australia from January 12 next year. The Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament is scheduled between January 15 and 20.
"Dhoni's presence (in the Vijay Hazare matches) will go a long way in boosting squad confidence. We are glad to see him back in domestic cricket," Verma said.
According to BCCI's schedule, Dhoni's first game will be a Vijay Hazare Trophy group match against Jammu and Kashmir in Bangalore on December 10. It will be followed by ties against Gujarat, Kerala, Haryana, Karnataka and the Indian Railways.
Owing to busy international commitments, Dhoni has been reluctant to play domestic cricket for Jharkhand. The state association had earlier approached him in more than one occasion.
It will be Dhoni's first appearance in domestic cricket since 2008 when he represented the Rest of India side against Baroda in an Irani Cup match. Dhoni's last Ranji Trophy appearance for Jharkhand was more than a decade ago, in March 2005, in Chandigarh, where he had scored 109 against Haryana.
Sources in the state cricket association said the reason for Dhoni's lengthy absence in the domestic circuit could be attributed to his hectic international schedules and the fact that he has been leading the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL and CL T20.
A source in JSCA revealed that Dhoni would not be a part of the Ranji Trophy despite his domestic comeback. "He won't play Ranji matches. His place in the side would mean denying a place to a promising youngster. As Dhoni has already retired from Test cricket, there is no reason for him to play four-day matches," the source said.
