Jamshedpur, Aug. 24: Awadh Dental College and Hospital (ADC&H), the state’s first private dental institute, has teamed up with Tata Motors Hospital (TMH) to provide better academic opportunities to its students.

According to guidelines issued by the Dental Council of India (DCI), third-year dental surgery students are required to take a clinical training programme at any 100-bed hospital.

P.S. Nath, the chief executive officer of the college, said the tie-up with TMH would help fulfil the criteria.“We have one of the best facilities for dental studies. The DCI has asked us to increase the number of students on our rolls from this session. The tie-up will help draw more students,” he said.

Doubling its seats at one go, the institute has decided to take 100 students for the bachelors’ course in dental surgery (BDS) from this academic session. “We are the only private medical college in Jharkhand that has been asked to increase its seats. The five-year BDS course will start in the 2008-09 session and the admission process is on in fullswing. Last year, we had 50 students, who are, currently, undergoing a four-year course in dental surgery.

The tie-up with the Tata hospital will help us train more students,” said an official of the institute.

Students undergoing the five-year BDS course will take a year of extra training compared to their predecessors.

“After examining the facility last year, the Dental Council had recommended an increase in seat for the college. We have one of the best surgical infrastructures and hostel facilities,” Nath said.

The Awadh Dental College is a part of Manglawati Sewa Sadan Trust and is affiliated to Ranchi University.

The process for admission to the five-year BDS course started earlier this year. Students will be admitted through an entrance test conducted by the university. “The institute caught DCI’s attraction because of its state-of-the-art laboratories and well-equipped out-patient department,” said Nath.

Officials said pre-clinical departments such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, conservative dentistry and dental materials function in a separate building on the campus.
