Dumka, May 28: Member of National Commission for Women Manju S. Hembrom today came down heavily on police for not taking action against youths raping and killing a teenager last month.

During a public hearing on trafficking and sexual exploitation of children and women at Agrasen Bhavan here today, Kamrul Bibi broke down while narrating how her daughter was raped and murdered by some influential youths of Chittargariya.

“Police and the law failed to punish the youths. Now, they have started threatening us for withdrawing the case. Can you protect us from them?” Kamrul asked.

Moved by the sorry saga of Kamrul, Hembrom immediately picked up the microphone and asked the police personnel present about the follow-up action taken in the case. DSP (headquarters) Chandan Kumar had to face her ire. “What you have been doing for more than a month? Arrest the fugitives and punish them,” she shouted. She also directed Kumar to produce the officer in-charge of Shikaripara police station, under whose jurisdiction the incident took place on April 12, before her.

Ranjit Goshami, Sahil Ansari, Lalka Miyan and Altab Miyan, the accused in the case, are “absconding”. Ranjit is son of an influential stone merchant. The rest also are rich.

An unnamed FIR was lodged on April 22, 10 days after the incident, even as the victim’s family had mentioned the names of the youths.
