Ranchi, Nov. 19: Campus security got a boost today with the laying of the foundation of a police outpost at Doranda College in the state capital.
DGP D.K. Pandey did the honours, the initiative aimed at beefing up security on the college premises and neighbouring areas besides keeping a tab on students coming to campus on bikes without helmets.
During a ceremony held as part of the ongoing traffic awareness drive by Ranchi police, the DGP said similar police pickets would soon be set up at other campuses of the capital.
Later, students of Doranda College took part in an awareness rally besides taking a pledge to follow traffic rules.
Ranchi University vice chancellor Ramesh Kumar Pandey, principal of Doranda College V.S. Tiwari and city traffic SP Sanjay Ranjan Singh were present too.
Appreciating the move, Pandey said: "Such awareness sessions should be conducted regularly. I also believe that no academic institution should allow its underage students to come on bikes and cars."
Traffic SP Singh cited the example of DAV-Nandraj student Ashish Kumar Singh (13), who got seriously injured while riding a bike on Friday.
"Adults have also lost lives on the road due to reasons like rash driving, not wearing helmets or strapping seat belts and over-speeding," he said.
He added that from Monday, they would again start a rigorous traffic drive.
"Minors found driving cars and riding bikes will not be spared. We will not stop by just imposing fines on them, licences of their parents will be impounded," Singh said.
