Jamshedpur, Sept. 1: Skits, collages, charts and a display of nutritious food formed an integral part of the inaugural day of the programme on World Nutrition Week at the Graduate School College for Women today.

Conducted by the home science department of the college, the week-long event will see undergraduate students present their understanding of nutrition through detailed charts.

The competition organised today saw students come up with the ideal recipes high on nutritive value. Six students competed in this event by cooking up innovative, yet healthy, delights. A sandwich prepared with a combination of fresh vegetables with portions of cheese went on to bag the first prize at the event.

“I ensured that the recipe had equal quantities of vegetables and cheese to become the ideal package,” said Carmeen Gandhi, the student who managed to impress teachers with her culinary skills as well as her expertise in creating a healthy diet.

Based on the theme of adolescence, students put up a skit on the importance of the right proportion of every element for proper body functioning.

While some students spoke at length about the importance of calcium in the body, failing which elderly ladies suffer from osteoporosis in the later years, quite a few shared vital information about the symptoms of anaemia and ways to combat the problem before it sets into the system. The display would be exhibited in the college for a week.

Four students will speak about the importance of nutrition particularly for the women in rural areas tomorrow. Students from three city colleges and four adjoining colleges would present their take on nutrition in Ghatshila on September 3.
