Jamshedpur, March 13: Disappointed students had to go back home, only to return a few hours later, when local authorities turned up late at Jamshedpur Women’s College for the campus placement procedure conducted by BPO giant Wipro today morning.

Confusions prevailed at the college through the morning when college authorities had to turn back candidates who had assembled at the college for placement exams, thinking that the recruitment procedures stood cancelled as they could not get in touch with the local authorities.

“There was some communication gap which forced us to cancel the placements initially. But matters were resolved soon and we could resume the process,” said the principal, Shukla Mahanty.

Wipro was the third multinational after Infosys BPO and IBM Daksh to visit the college for campus recruitment.

Initially, over 500 students had turned up for the interview in the morning. But, when the process began around 11 am, the college authorities could only manage to contact about 100 students.

“We are trying to get in touch with as many students as possible. The placements would continue till late in the evening,” said Mahanty.

Conducted in four different phases, 21 students have been selected out of the 200 who ultimately appeared for the placement today.

“We would have the recruitment process tomorrow, too,” said Arindam Hira, executive from 2com the Calcutta-based consultancy, which is hiring candidates on behalf of Wipro.

The selected candidates, would appear for a three-month paid training and would be placed with the Wipro call centre at Calcutta.

“It is good news for colleges here that so many of our students are getting placed with leading MNCs. The best part is that not only call centres but banking sectors are also coming for placements,” added Mahanty.

The college has already received a nod from HSBC, Calcutta, who will arrive here by the month-end.
