Ranchi, July 9: Distracted by “objectionable” posters, commuters forwarded complaints to the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) that is planning to serve notices to advertising agencies.

“We will first ask advertising agencies to remove the obscene posters. If they fail to do so within a stipulated time, we will not only pull down such posters ourselves but also fine the advertising agencies,” said RMC mayor Rama Khalkho.

The fine would range between Rs 2,000 and Rs 5,000 depending upon the “degree of indecency”.

The civic body has formed a two-member survey team to make a list of these posters. The team started its work today and is expected to submit its report to the deputy administrator within the next three days.

Khalkho also said that the team would also make a list of posters and hoardings that have been placed illegally.

Obscene posters have come up at various locations across the city. The Overbridge area is the worst of all. RMC officials said Kutchery Road, Ratu Road bus stand and Piska More, among others, are also known for “obscene” posters.

Commuters have also been complaining that obscene posters distract them. Some commuters even told Khalkho that a good number of bikers, while driving through the Overbridge, get distracted.

Commuters had urged Khalkho to take necessary action against the advertising agencies.

The team is expected to submit its report within three days. “If the rain continues then the survey might take a little longer,” said an RMC official, who has been assigned the task. He said the team would also make lists of illegal posters.

RMC officials also said several residents have placed posters along their buildings.

“If any of them have placed obscene posters, they would be fined, too,” said an official.
