One of Jamshedpur's oldest institutions of higher learning for girl students, The Graduate School College for Women in Sakchi would change its address in 2019 to make room for the proposed expansion of Tata Steel Works.

The steel giant had sought relocation of the college within its lease area as it requires the existing college site for its Jamshedpur Works expansion plan from 9.7 MT per annum to 11 MT per annum.

Set up in 1971, the college will shift from its existing location near Sakchi police station to about 1.5km away near Subernarekha Link Road behind Tagore Society, also in Sakchi.

East Singhbhum district administration on Friday approved it in principle at a meeting attended by officials from Tata Steel and the college.

"In principle, we have agreed to allow the shifting of the college to a new location as both its authorities and Tata Steel have agreed to it. However, we have asked district education officer R.K.P Singh and ADM law and order Subodh Kumar to furnish comprehensive reports on the proposed new campus after which we will send a formal proposal on the college relocation to the state government," said East Singhbhum DC Amit Kumar.

The DEO would submit a report on whether the proposed new campus would have sufficient space for the college's 6,000-plus students. The ADM law and order in its report would state if the new location was suitable for a women's education hub.

Tata Steel has agreed to build a structure in the new site similar to the existing college building (G+2) on 2.53 acres.

"We have intimated the district administration that Kolhan University Syndicate has given its consent for relocation. We hope that after the new college building comes up, we can start the 2019 session in the new place," said college principal Usha Shukla.

Tata Steel has also sought relocation of ADLS Sunshine School, Karim City College and Kerala Samajam Model School, all in Sakchi, for its expansion plans.
