Ranchi, July 6: The college girl, who went missing on June 25 prompting a section of local people to level kidnapping charge against her Muslim boyfriend, was brought back to Simdega today, a day after police traced the duo to a Puri hotel in Odisha.

Police produced the two before a magistrate, where their statements were recorded.

The tribal girl, a BA Part-II student who lived in Saldega village near the district headquarters, told police that she had gone willingly with her boyfriend Md Mishba of nearby Bhattitoli locality and that she was not abducted.

However, following the "standard procedure", police forwarded the youth to jail and sent the girl to the sadar hospital for medical examination.

"They are not minors and the girl claimed that she had gone willingly. But we will have to wait and see if she sticks to her statement, which she has given to police, in court," said Simdega SP Rajeev Ranjan Singh.

The girl left home for going to college on June 25 morning. When she did not return till late evening, her sister filed a complaint with police, alleging that Mishba had abducted her.

Though the girl and the youth, who also studied in the same college, are not minors and it appeared to be a case of elopement, a newly formed outfit Nagar Sangharsh Samiti came on the forefront demanding the girl's recovery and the youth's arrest.

Initially, the police found it difficult to trace the duo as both Mishba and the girl had switched off their mobile phones.

"But, we kept tabs on their relatives and friends and ultimately found," said a senior police officer.
