Jamshedpur-based basketball mentor J.P. Singh has added another feather to his cap.

The 60-year-old highly experienced coach has been appointed consultant at the elite National Basketball Academy (NBA) in Indore.

Apart from developing skills of cadets, the academy also hosts regular camps for national junior and senior basketball players.

It trains 250 players using 50 experienced coaches and boasts of indoor courts and other facilities.

Singh, who retired from Tata Steel sports department in January, has been instrumental in producing several cagers during his stint as mentor at the Tata Steel Basketball Training Centre.

“I am glad to have become a consultant for NBA. I will try to give my best,” he told The Telegraph.

Singh’s job as consultant would involve the use of latest technology in training, development of personality and leadership qualities of players and provide overall motivation.

“I will be educating NBA mentors on these aspects. I have got an important assignment which would help in the overall development of basketball in the country,” he pointed out.

Singh, a resident of Sonari, has also been coach of the country's junior and senior teams. It was during his coaching tenure that the senior outfit went on to win the International Golden Eagle Basketball Championship held in Chennai in 1997.

He was also head coach of the senior national mens’ outfit in 2004.

The Basketball Federation of India (BFI) had also sent him to Dhaka with an assignment to train Bangladeshi basketballers in 2000.

Singh, who had a brief stint as head (sports and games) of Ranchi-based Sapphire International School, was also joint secretary of the Jharkhand State Basketball Association and chairman of its selection committee.
