City lad Nishant Kumar won the 1st All India Open School Chess Championship which ended at Tulsi Bhavan, Bistupur, on Thursday.
Top seed Nishant, a tenth grader of Rajendra Vidyalaya, settled for a draw in the eighth and final round against Aayush Agarwal, also from the steel city, but won on the basis of cummulative points.
Nishant logged 7.5 points to finish on top of the table.
Unseeded Aayush, a student of Delhi Public School, had one round left. He continued his good show to defeat Ishan Gupta to finish with 6.5 points. Two more players —- Pratik Agarwal from Delhi Public School in Dhanbad and Anshul Nigam of Jamshedpur’s Loyola School —- also got 6.5 points each, but Aayush stood second on account of better score in the tie-breaker.
Pratik took the third slot whereas Anshul stood fourth.
The girls followed suit.
There was a three-way tie among Kushagra Divyam of DPS Patna, Ananya Menkudle of VB Mandir, Wathoda (Maharashtra) and Pracheta Agarwal of Sacred Heart Convent School, Jamshedpur, who scored six points each.
The decisive tie-breaker resulted in Kushagra finishing fifth, Ananya sixth and Pracheta seventh.
The top four got prizes aplenty. Nishant walked home with Rs 20,000, Aayush received Rs 12,000, Pratik Rs 10,000 and Anshul Rs 8,000.
Nishant, Aayush and Pratik also received trophies.
Jamshedpur MP Ajoy Kumar, social worker Bailey Bodhanwala, senior BJP leader Sarayu Rai and area manager of chief sponsors Resonance Eduventure Pvt. Ltd Kuntal Dutta handed over the prizes.
Senior office bearers of Jamshedpur Chess Academy (JCA), including president N.K. Mishra, were also present. The four-day tie was hosted by JCA under the aegis of All Jharkhand Chess Association.
