Students aspiring to pursue postgraduation under Kolhan University can no longer walk into a college teaching the desired course and apply for the same from this academic session.

The Chaibasa-based varsity has centralised the admission process by designating subject-specific postgraduate (PG) centres at constituent colleges that teach masters programmes. This means that students can apply for the subject they want to study only at the centre earmarked for it after downloading the application form from the university’s website www.kolhanuniversity.ac.in.

PG centres have been allotted for all 22 postgraduation subjects. But the number of centres per subject is not same.

For example, there are seven PG centres for Hindi — Kolhan University, Mahila College, Chaibasa, Jamshedpur Cooperative College, Graduate College, JLN College, Chakradharpur, Singhbhum College, Chandil, and Ghatshila College — and two for English, Kolhan University and Jamshedpur Cooperative College.

Explaining the new system, registrar of Kolhan University D.N. Mahto said: “The PG centres have been introduced from the 2014 academic session to do away with confusion and streamline the admission process. As per the new rules, students cannot apply for a particular subject in the college he or she wants to study. They have to do so only at the designated centre for the subject. The admission form will have three spaces where the students have to mention the colleges they want to study according to their preferences.”

He added that they allotted the centres on the basis of infrastructure and manpower in the chosen colleges.

“Those wishing to study postgraduation at the university headquarters in Chaibasa, they have to apply there,” Mahto added.

Asked how will the seats be distributed under the new system, the registrar said: “It will depend on the students’ merit and availability. A meritorious student will have more chances of getting his/her favourite college.”

A total of nine colleges under Kolhan University offer postgraduate studies. There are 120 seats each for non-practical subjects and 60 each for practical ones.

The cut-off marks for applying for admission is 45 per cent in honours subjects at the undergraduate level.
