The Bible says that Jesus was born in a manger in Bethlehem.

But, a priest, a deacon studying for priesthood, 11 brothers and a teacher have decided to give a new look this Christmas for the Nativity scene at St Mary's Cathedral grounds at Purulia Road, Ranchi.

Instead of a manger, the priests have decided to place baby Jesus inside a cave on a bed of hay, with hills and a waterfall, as well as Joseph, Mary, the three wise men of the East, his guardian angel, sheep and shepherds.

"Jesus made his appearance on earth in the most humble place to convey that he is one of us, always accessible to the poor and the sufferers. We have chosen to deviate a bit from tradition while keeping the Biblical theme intact, only to lend more colour to the birth of the Lord," Father Angelus, a young priest of St Mary's Cathedral, who is leading the team, said.

"So, we decided to place baby Jesus on a bed of hay inside a cave, surrounded by a waterfall and small hills. Lots of people, including non-Christians, are regular visitors to the cathedral on Christmas. We want everyone to enjoy the view," the priest said.

They started to work on the new look on December 19 to ensure everything was ready by December 24 evening.

Wilfred Veigas, a deacon, is looking after the technical requirements of lights and making waterfall look real. Asked why, he said: "Before joining the church, I had a business as an electrician."

The deacon said a submersible pump would make the water run cyclically to give the impression of a waterfall.

Pradeep Ekka, a teacher of spoken English, who is also part of the team, added volunteering his services to create the crib at St Mary's Cathedral, was a part of his Christmas celebrations every year.

Father Theodore Toppo, parish priest of St Mary's Cathedral, said he told young priests to come up with something new this Christmas.

"I have given them a free hand with materials they need. I am confident the young team will do a splendid job this Christmas," Toppo said.
