Around 40 carpenters from across Dhanbad district planted saplings of sagwan, shisham, ashok and goldmohur in front of Zila School on Wednesday, to counter the impression that they are the ones responsible for cutting trees for wood.
The plantation drive was organised by Dhanbad Carpenters' Club formed on May 15 by Pidilite Industries, a company that manufactures various kinds of adhesives.
President of the club Suresh Prasad Sharma said the aim of the drive was to spread awareness about conservation of the environment, especially in industrial areas like Dhanbad with several open cast mines.
"It is not a symbolic plantation but I try to do it on a regular basis. I have planted over a 100 saplings near my residence at Manaitand," said Sharma, adding that their club also planned to repair broken furniture and donate new ones to Dhanbad Blind School, Jagjivan Nagar.
"Though our job is to make furniture for which trees need to be felled for their wood, we are deeply annoyed over the depleting green cover. Conservation of environment becomes more important in a state like Jharkhand, which is endowed with natural beauty," said Naresh Sharma, sales officer and treasurer of the 112-member club.
Distributor of Pidilite Industries Lalit Jagnani said that such plantation drives were being carried out in over 200 places across India with the help of local carpenters' clubs.
