Q: I have appeared in 10+2 with Science (maths) and have a deep interest in detective novels and crime stories. Through these I have learnt about criminology and want to know if it is possible for me to become a criminologist. If yes, please guide me in this direction.
Neeraj, Ranchi
A: As the name suggests, criminology is the study of crime and criminals. This includes the analysis of deviant behavior of criminals and study of criminal psychology.
The task of a criminologist involves prevention of crime, rehabilitation of criminals, crime detection and investigation.Degree and post-graduate courses in criminology combined with correctional management or forensic sciences are offered in India. Degree holders may opt for one year or two year post graduate diploma courses. Law graduates may take special courses in criminology. The course syllabus includes principals of criminology, psychology of crime, criminal law, police administration, forensic science and medicine, juvenile delinquency, correctional management and rehabilitation of criminals.
Professionals find jobs in Intelligence agencies, detective services, CBI, IB, juvenile homes and voluntary organisations as probation officers, jailors, social welfare officers and counselors. Those who received specialised training in forensic science can seek employment in forensic labs and forensic departments of crime fighting units. Self-employment is also possible as private detectives. Insurance companies and corporate houses also absorb criminologists to ascertain bonafides of clients.
Q: I have appeared for Class 10 exams and wanted to pursue my career in engineering but found the class XI syllabus of mathematics difficult. Please suggest how to proceed.
Abhijeet Singh, Ranchi.
A: The syllabus of class XI in maths is not tough but the basic problem is that it is not much relevant with that of class X. Therefore it may seem difficult to you.
If you try to study the theoretical portion of a chapter thoroughly before starting to solve the problems, you may find that maths at Class XI levels is not tough at all.
If you still find it hard to cope with, take help of someone who has thorough knowledge in the subject to realise your cherished dream.
