Ranchi, Aug. 7: Songs and speeches, nagada beats and intellectual debates, craft and a contemporary marriage mandap — International Day of the World’s Indigenous People, celebrated two days in advance today at St Xavier’s School, Doranda, rocked with both style and substance.

As many as 2,000 students from 30 city schools as well as engineering, management and medical institutions such as BIT-Mesra, Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS), XISS, St Xavier’s College and Gossner College took part in the daylong Tribal Youth Fest organised by the host school and Adivasi Development Network.

Popular singer Mukund Nayak proved to be a top draw. But no less inviting were events such as group discussion, debate, painting, essay and cultural functions, primarily related to tribal life.

Serious issues such as increase in alcohol and drug abuse among tribal youth, legal rights as well as religion were addressed.

Invitees also gave speeches on issues close to their heart.

Welfare secretary Rajeev Arun Ekka spoke on tribal socio-economic life. Disaster management department secretary Neelima Kerketta and XISS director Father Alex Ekka focused on education challenges related to the tribals.

Artist Shashi Shekhar showcased paintings, while leader Prabhakar Tirkey put up kiosks selling medicinal plants, artefacts and coffee mugs.

Adding a twist to festivities were youths who designed a tribal marriage mandap with a contemporary look. “We call it marwah, the venue where marriage is solemnised. We are trying it give a new look,” said a youth, Munna Lohar.

Harshit Lakra, secretary of Adivasi Development Network, said the aim of the fest was a platform for tribals to voice views and showcase talent.
