Ranchi, Oct. 30: In a bid to create awareness and check on the increasing number of patients suffering from breast and cervical cancer, a health check-up camp was organised by the army division headquarters at Dipatoli today.

The camp was conducted in assistance with the Army Wives’ Welfare Association (AWWA) and the gynaecology and obstetrics department of the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS). It will run for a week at Dipatoli and Namkum and will ensure the participation of wives of officers and jawans, said AWWA president Manju Singh.

Singh said that women are often shy about coming out in the open about their medical problems and this camp will help them learn more about the disease.

The medical team is experienced and will guide army women to take precautions so as to avoid breast or the cervical cancer, Singh added.

A team of doctors headed by the RIMS gynaecology department chief Pritibala Sahay will conduct the camp.

Sahay and her team will also show the visitors the technique of self examining, which will further reduce the chances of developing any form of cancer, Sahay said.

Sahay, further outlining her reasons for developing cancer in women, said that those who have had multiple pregnancies or women marry at an early age are more susceptible to cancer. However, the problem can be treated if detected early but frequent check-ups are necessary, Sahay added.

Dipatoli Station Polyclinic director Colonel R.K. Choudhary said that cancer is one of fastest growing diseases in developing countries. “As many as 7 lakh patients suffer from cancer every year. Awareness is very important to get rid of the problem,” he said.
