Ranchi, Dec. 31: Sanjoy Kumar Sadhu (21), who had attempted to immolate himself on December 17 at Dumka Central Jail after being frustrated with the delay in getting bail, succumbed to his burn injury at RIMS last night.

Sadhu was in judicial custody allegedly for abducting a minor girl. He was referred to RIMS with 70 per cent burn injury from Patliputra Medical College and Hospital in Dhanbad. He was undergoing treatment at its burn ward there for the past 12 days.

Sources at Dumka said that Sadhu had attempted to immolate himself at the jail toilet. “On December 17 morning, he went to the toilet with a small kerosene lamp. He poured the oil on his blanket and set himself on fire. Jail inmates, who witnessed smoke coming out of the toilet, raised an alarm following which his burnt body was recovered. He was sent to Dumka sadar hospital from there he was referred to PMCH,” the sources added.

The sources said Sadhu, a native of Danglapara in Dumka, had fallen in love with undergraduate girl, Anuradha Pandit of SP College. To avoid the family pressure, the duo fled and reportedly married at Siuri in Bengal on October 17. After the marriage, Gurupada Pandit, the girl’s father, lodged a complaint with police alleging Sadhu of abducting her minor daughter. Under police pressure, Sadhu surrendered with Anuradha at Dumka civil court on October 26. Since they had no marriage certificate, the court sent Sadhu to Dumka central jail and the girl to Deoghar remand home. On December 15, when Anuradha turned 19, Sadhu approached the court for his release saying that she had become adult. His application, however, could not be entertained for two days. This made Sadhu impatient and attempting suicide.
