Jamshedpur, Oct. 1: Most women in the city have kissed goodbye to K-serials and are now glued to business channels.

Housewives — known to be good managers of finance than their husbands — are entering into stocks and shares and are making quick bucks, too.

The operating city stock broking companies claim that every month around 10 to 12 women join the business, a symbol of new initiative that women, especially housewives, even 10 years ago would have cared little.

But time is changing, for certain.

Atanu Ghosh, the branch manager of Religare Stock Broking Company, estimates that around 30 per cent of the total investors of the steel city are women and their participation is witnessing an annual growth of 15 to 16 per cent.

“In my company, around 50 per cent women are investors but about 20 per cent of them are directed by their husbands. But the rest are independently working and are excelling because of their sincerity and good managerial skills,” said Ghosh.

For Rakhi Pandey, who has been in this field for the past year, says it is a quick way of making money without compromising on family responsibilities. “I have earned up to Rs 1 lakh, that too, with spending only a few hours on it. I keep myself updated about stocks and shares values of different companies. I can concentrate on it more than my husband, as he looks after the business. Earlier, I was a little apprehensive about investing money into it, but if oneis alert one can excel in it. Some of my friends are also joining the business,” she said.

Deepa Bajaj of Karvy Stock Broking Limited, feels that women are doing well in this field. Not only educated women, but also those from humble backgrounds are also very enthusiastic about shares.

“The popularity for the stock broking among city women can be estimated from the fact that in Bistupur itself, there are around 15 offices and in every office has many women workers. It is indeed a positive sign,” she said.

The field is rewarding as well as interesting. Women entering this field are also gaining an insight into the financial sector and Indian market. One has to update oneself though newspapers, books and magazines. “For women, especially housewives, investing time and effort would surely be rewarding,” said Bajaj.

With business channels ruling the roost in the households even on prime time, the popular TV serials are obviously on way to a blackout.
