Bail for NIMS boss

Ranchi: Chairman of National Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) Balvir S. Tomar, who was arrested from Jaipur on the basis of an attempt-to-rape complaint filed in Ranchi by a student, was granted bail on Tuesday.

Fast track court of additional judicial commissioner N.C. Verma allowed bail after the girl's father appeared before him to say that the matter had been mutually resolved.

Homecoming

Giridih: Ten girls and fourteen women, who were rescued from Palakkad district in Kerala, reached their homes at different villages of Pirtand block on Tuesday. They were rescued by Kerala police and sent to shelter home two months ago.

Rebel arrests

Daltonganj: Two Maoist sympathisizers - Krishna Yadav and Brijlal Sharma - were arrested from Pandu on Tuesday. Police have seized nine sets of police uniform. The duo have admitted that they were on their way to deliver the consignment to Maoist area commander Ajay Yadav.

Varsity review

Ranchi: Governor-cum-chancellor of state universities Droupadi Murmu will hold a review meeting of six state varsities including Birsa Agricultural University on Wednesday at Raj Bhavan. Governor's principal secretary S.K. Satpathy said the review would discuss issues related with development, academics, teachers recruitment among other.

Thieves held

Lohardaga: Three persons, including a minor, was arrested in Sadar area on Tuesday in connection with bike theft. The trio stole a bike from Akhori colony in the morning and was nabbed later in the evening. SDPO Arvind Kumar Verma said the bike was also recovered.

NH mishap kills one

Bokaro: An unidentified elderly person was crushed to death on NH-23 near Luakaiya More, around 42km from Bokaro steel city, on Tuesday morning.

According to Petarwar police, the man was hit by a speeding truck coming from the opposite direction. He died on the spot. The body has been sent to Tenughat hospital for post-mortem.

Bribe cuffs

Dhanbad: A revenue clerk was caught red-handed by the anti-corruption bureau, Dhanbad unit, taking bribe of Rs 2,000 at his Baghmara house in Dhanbad on Tuesday. Mohammed Kuddus was accepting the money from one Gangadhar Mahto for processing a file related to land mutation.

Two injured

Bokaro: Two persons were seriously injured after a speeding car lost control and rammed into a roadside shop at Sector IV-G of Bokaro city. Ravindra Kumar and Baban Paswan, who were in the shop, sustained multiple injuries and were rushed to Bokaro General Hospital. Their condition is critical. The driver left his vehicle and escaped.

Doctors' strike

Dhanbad: Doctors of Patliputra Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) held a meeting on Tuesday to discuss strategy for the three-day strike called by IMA, Jharkhand chapter, and Jharkhand State Health Services Association. The strike is scheduled to begin from Wednesday. However, emergency services will be spared. The meeting was conducted by secretary of teachers' association Dr Leena Singh.

Dhanbad: An awareness programme for parents of deaf and mute children was organised to mark the International Day of Deaf at Jeevan Jyoti, a school for the physically and mentally challenged, on Tuesday.

Gang busted

Jamshedpur: An inter-city gang of chain-snatchers operating in Ranchi and Jamshedpur was busted on Tuesday after steel city police caught its two members from Kadma on Monday night.

Police have also recovered three loaded pistols from Saurabh Singh (29) of Mango and Pramendra Kumar (32) of Koderma. The duo used to snatch gold chains and then sell them to a Gaya-based jeweller, Chandan Kumar Verma (22), who was arrested on Tuesday from Sitaramdera bus terminus with 70 grams of stolen gold ornaments. The two were involved in 11 incidents of chain snatching in Jamshedpur in the past one week and seven in the capital in the last fortnight.

SUV kills girl

Ranchi: A two-year-old girl was killed after being hit by an SUV in HEC area on Tuesday, triggering protests by local residents. The girl, who was playing at a ground nearby, was hit by the vehicle that was on reverse gear. Angry residents gheraoed Dhurwa thana and even beat up the SUV driver, who was rescued by police and taken to the police station.

Ranchi: A special mass was held at Cheshire Home in Dipatoli to mark the 356th death anniversary of French Catholic priest St Vincent de Paul on Tuesday.

Arms cuffs

Ranchi: Two men, wanted in connection with cases related to violation of Arms Act, were arrested from Itki-Nagri area on Tuesday. Harish Ansari and Irfan Ansari have been forwarded to 14 days' judicial custody.

Snatch cuffs

Three men were arrested on Tuesday for snatching a bag which had a mobile phone and important documents from one Krishna Kalindi at Khairboni village in Potka on July 28. Vishnupado Bhakat, Ganesh Bhakat and Sumanto Bhakat were rounded up from their residences in Jadugora.

Criminals in net

Two notorious criminals, accused in four cases of attempted murder, loot and snatching, were arrested on a tip-off from Jugsalai on Tuesday. Md Khurshid and Md Chhotu have been sent to Ghaghidih jail.

Lens on vendors

Dhalbhum SDO Suraj Kumar on Tuesday carried out a surprise inspection of unauthorised makeshift vegetable vending stalls at Kadma market in Jamshedpur. The action was taken following complaints of road congestion in Kadma.
