Ranchi: Chief secretary Rajbala Verma on Tuesday set a deadline for banks to link accounts of social scheme beneficiaries with their Aadhaar numbers.

She said the task should be completed by September 15, and promised to provide data operators to banks to expedite the work.

State BJP boss

Ranchi: Newly appointed state BJP chief Laxman Gilua will formally assume charge on September 4. During a meeting on Tuesday, it was decided that all familiar faces, especially those associated with the party since the Jan Sangh days, would be invited for the event.

Suicide

Giridih: One Laxmi Devi (30) jumped into a well with her seven-month-old daughter in Bagodar, Giridih, on Tuesday. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

Jolt injury

Lohardaga: One Sudha Devi (35) was critically injured after she came in contact with a live wire in Senha on Tuesday. She has been admitted to Lohardaga Sadar Hospital.

Fatal mishap

Ramgarh: An unidentified man, in his mid-thirties, was killed when a trailer hit the cycle he was riding on NH-33 at Chuttupalu Ghati on Tuesday.

Rebel arrest

Dumka: CPI(Maoist) rebel Hopna Hembrom was arrested from Shikaripara on Tuesday. Police said Hopna was wanted in four cases of rebel violence.

Marandi fast

Hazaribagh: JVM boss Babulal Marandi went on a two-day fast at the zilla school ground in Hazaribagh town on Tuesday against the NTPC coal project at Barkagaon.

River mishap

Jamshedpur: A 20-year-old man was feared drowned in Baroda Ghat of Kharkai river under Bagbera thana area in Jamshedpur on Tuesday afternoon.

Amit Kumar Singh, resident of Safiganj area in Jugsalai, had gone to take a bath in the river around 1pm when he was swept away. Bagbera OC J.K. Thakur said they were yet to fish out the body. Divers have been pressed into service.

Held with gun

Jamshedpur: Three men were arrested during a raid conducted at a house at Nepali Bustee in Tinplate under Golmuri thana area in Jamshedpur on Monday night. Braj Mohan Jha (40), Santosh Kumar Singh (35) and Prabhat Kumar Sharma (31) were part of criminal Akhilesh Singh's gang. Police have recovered two pistols from them.

Extortion case

Jamshedpur: A case of extortion was registered against five men for taking away Rs 15,600 from an eatery near Tatanagar station in the wee hours of Tuesday. Owner Nilesh Kumar lodged an FIR against one Fato Hansda, resident of Karandih, and four of his aides, who are yet to be identified. Police said Hansda and his men came to the hotel around 1am and demanded Rs 1 lakh as extortion. When refused, they assaulted the hotel staff and took away Rs 15,600. No arrests have been made so far.

Jamshedpur: Students of Jusco School South Park in Jamshedpur brought laurels for the cradle at the Khel Mahotsava conducted by Krida Bharati East Singhbhum at Tube Recreation Club in Baridih on Monday.

Jamshedpur: Six wheel chairs, two tricycles, two hearing aids, eight crutches and five blind sticks were distributed among differently abled persons during a program organised by Jharkhand Viklang Sansthan at Ghorabandha Sai Temple hall in Telco, Jamshedpur, on Tuesday.

Ranchi: A team of bomb disposal squad from Jharkhand Jaguar went to Indian Rasoi, a restaurant at Kantatoli under Lower Bazaar, after an unclaimed bag was spotted there on Tuesday evening. After checking the bag, only books and copies were found.

Body in quarry

Bokaro: The body of an unidentified woman, in her early-twenties, was fished out from a quarry pond at Lututhand village in Chandankyari, 34km from here, on Tuesday.

Police said the body bore several injury marks. The body has been sent to Chas Sub-divisional Hospital for post-mortem.

Traffic drive

Ranchi: An anti-crime checking drive was carried out across the city on the direction of city SP Kishore Kaushal on Tuesday. The purpose of the drive was to trap criminals and also to give lessons to those who drive without license, helmet and proper documents.

Fatal mishap

Bokaro: A 38-year-old man was crushed to death under the wheels of his own vehicle at Gandhi Nagar in Bermo, 45km from here, on Tuesday. Santosh Sah could not start his dumper truck and went to its rear wheels to check the fault. A truck from the opposite direction suddenly hit the dumper and Santosh came under the wheels of his vehicle.

Disaster drill

Ranchi: District disaster management authority with the help of an inspector of 9th battalion of National Disaster Response Force, Saroj Kumar, imparted training to around 200 students and teachers of DAV, Dhurwa, on Tuesday.

Water stir

Dhanbad: Over 100 residents of Chaitudih of Katras, some 25km from here, protested at Chaitudih Colliery against water crisis in their area. They also stopped coal transportation work for more than four hours.

National pat

Bokaro: Ashok Singh, principal of Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Bokaro, and Manohar Lal, principal of Guru Nanak High School, Ranchi, have been selected for the national award this year. The awards will be given on Teachers' Day by President Pranab Mukherjee in Delhi.
