Jamshedpur, Sept. 18: A pall of gloom descended over the Loco Colony following the tragic death of T. Tirumal, alias Kumar, whose body was recovered from the railway tracks between Tatanagar and Salgajhuri stations this morning.
Kumar (24), a resident of the colony, was crushed under the wheels of the speeding Ispat Express near the Salgajhuri station.
Sources in the Government Railway Police, Tatanagar, said although no notes or messages could be recovered from the deceased, circumstantial evidences hinted it to be a case of suicide.
Son of T. Pala Rao, an employee of South Eastern Railway, Kumar was one of the most brilliant students of the Tatanagar Railway School. For his contemporaries, he stood as an inspiration.
According to one of the bereaved family members, he topped his examinations throughout his school life. In 1998, Kumar completed his matriculation and went over to Visakhapatnam to pursue the plus-two course.
?In 2001, Kumar joined an engineering college in Visakhapatnam with computer science. But he developed some psychological problems from the next year leading the college authorities to admit him to a mental hospital in Andhra Pradesh,? said the relative.
But his condition deteriorated further forcing his parents to bring him back and get him admitted to a mental asylum in Ranchi. Though he partially recovered, he was under the constant supervision of a psychiatrist after that, the relative informed.
But in the process, he had to abandon his goal of becoming a computer engineer, which made him a much-frustrated man, the relative said further. In order to divert his attention, his younger brother, an expert in computer education, got him engaged in a contract firm registered under Tata Steel?s research and development wing. But it did not help him much and he seemed to be constantly ruing about not being an engineer.
One of the youths living near Loco Colony told The Telegraph that soon after the Ispat Express crossed Salgajhuri, someone informed him about a youth being killed by the speeding train. ?Since we were celebrating the Vishwakarma pujas then, we did not take it seriously. It was only this morning that we came to know that it was Kumar,? he said.
Kumar?s father seemed too dazed for a coherent response. ?I did not expect Kumar to die this way,? was all he could mutter.
Woman kills herself
Sudeepta Chatterjee (32), the wife of R. Chatterjee, a former employee of Tata Steel, committed suicide at her residence at Adarshnagar Phase, on late Friday night. She hung herself from the ceiling fan.
According to police, on Friday night the couple had an argument, following which they had dinner and went to bed. While her husband slept in a separate room with their daughters, Sudeepta went over to an adjacent room.
In the morning, Sudeepta?s room was found bolted from inside and she did not answer to repeated knocks. Suspecting foul play, Chatterjee informed the police, who broke open to find her hanging from the ceiling fan. D.K. Srivastava, the officer-in-charge of the Sonari police station, confirmed that it was the case of a clear-cut suicide and they are looking into the matter.
