Jamshedpur, Oct. 23: Students of Xavier Labour Relation Institute (XLRI) top scored during the five-day summer internship programme, which concluded at the B-school campus yesterday.

About 45 companies participated in the summer intern recruitment process which kicked off on October 18.

The five-day process, which was divided into four slots, indicated a shift towards fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) firms, which accounted for about 40 per cent of the placements.

Within this category, the major recruiter was Hindustan Lever Limited (HLL) which picked up nine students.

Other recruiters included Tata Administrative Services (TAS), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and ICICI Bank which roped in seven students each. While Dr Reddy’s Laboratory selected six students, Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTS), Tata Motors, ABN Amro and Standard Chartered picked up five students each.

The B-school campus attracted some high-profile firms such as Bates, ICICI Prudential, Texas Instruments, Tata AIG, Hewlett Packard, Accenture, Msource which participated in the summer internship for the first time. Mercer, a global consultancy company, and Tata Motors visited the campus after a long absence.

Stipends too were on the rise. Cognizant Technology Solutions offered the highest stipend of Rs 50,000 for two months. The average stipend across sectors stood at Rs 26,500 as compared to Rs 23,250 last year.

According to Aneesh Banerjee, secretary of the Placement Committee, this year’s batch-size comprised 180 students, of which 156 were selected in different companies during the structured process spanning five days.

The remaining 24 did not accept the offer as they are waiting for some of the companies like Power Finance Corporation, Lintas, Reserve Bank of India, which is expected to visit the B-School campus later in the year.

“This year placements have shown a marked shift towards placements with information technology support. The companies visiting the campus wants to make online placements. XLRI is gearing up for it. In the next few years, we would see a shift with placements going online,” Banerjee said.
