Maninder Singh had perhaps wanted to be different when he modified a two-wheeler belonging to his father and made it roar like a gun.

But the 21-year-old’s joy ride on the “bike with a firing sound” ended on Wednesday midnight when police caught him and a friend for spreading panic in Jamshedpur.

A school dropout and son of Ravinder Singh (55), a resident of Burma Road in Burmamines, Maninder was riding pillion while his friend Anil Singh (25) rode the bike when police intercepted them near Akaashdeep Plaza in Golmuri around midnight.

Both were arrested and taken to Golmuri thana where an entry was made in the station diary.

Though Maninder was eventually released on a personal bond, Anil, a resident of Sakchi, was sent to jail as he was wanted in connection with an assault case registered with Golmuri police station.

The motorcycle bearing the registration number JH05G-2515 has been seized.

Speaking about the case, officer-in-charge (OC) of Golmuri police station Nehaluddin Khan said around midnight, some residents of Golmuri and Burmamines called up SSP Amol V. Homkar to complain about firing in their localities.

The SSP immediately asked SP (city) Karthik S. to look into the matter, who, in turn, instructed the OCs of Burmamines and Golmuri to find out where exactly the firing took place.

“But after extensive searches, both the police forces drew a blank. We eventually discovered that the gun shot sound came from a motorcycle that had passed through the twin localities. Even as we were looking for the bikers, the two youths passed by a police party belonging to Golmuri thana. The police team started chasing the bike and intercepted it near Akashdeep Plaza,” Khan told The Telegraph.

Asked about the “unique” bike, the OC said there was a red button on the right side of the vehicle’s handle. When the button is pressed, a sound similar to that of gun shots rents the air.

“The sound comes out intermittently and anyone will take it to be real firing,” the officer added.
