Heavy vehicles will be barred from entering Lalpur-Kokar Road in Ranchi till further notice due to the ongoing construction of Distillery Bridge.
Announcing this on Thursday, executive engineer of the road construction department Sanjay Kumar Sinha said the vehicles would have to take the alternative route via KantaToli.
The order comes in the wake of heavy vehicles using the temporary bridge constructed beside the old one for the movement of school buses, cars and two wheelers.
"The temporary bridge can take the load of vehicles weighing 10 tonnes. But it was noticed that vehicles weighing over 10 tonnes were using the bridge in the night. The diversion road that has been constructed beside the bridge for use of light vehicles was also being used by trucks and lorries," said one of the supervisors of A.S. Construction that has been assigned to build the bridge.
The road construction department also barred all kinds of vehicles from entering the road that passes through the Mahatma Gandhi market under an over bridge due to its repair work.
However, Main Road witnessed traffic bottlenecks due to the ban till afternoon.
"Once the over bridge at the Main Road is repaired and the bridge on Lalpur-Kokar Road constructed, then all types of vehicles can pass through the road in Mahatma Gandhi market and Lalpur-Kokar Road," Sinha said.
Traffic SP Manoj Ratan Chothe said he had taken all the necessary action to implement the ban order. "I have deputed traffic personnel at the construction site from 8am to 10pm. For remaining hours, direction has been given to police control room vehicles and local police stations to ensure that ban order is implemented properly," he added.
However, before the ban order was issued, a stretch between Lalpur Chowk and Kokar Road witnessed traffic snarls since morning after a truck broke down on Wednesday night.
"Due to the break down, traffic had got disrupted. Traffic was restored after the truck was removed and traffic constables were deputed to implement the ban order," said Ajay Tirkey, a local resident.
