Jamshedpur: A baggage scanning machine would soon be installed at the A1-category Tatanagar station and 20 more CCTV cameras put up to beef up its security.
Railway officials on Monday said New Delhi-based Railway Board green-lit Chakradharpur railway division's proposal for a baggage scanner at Tatanagar, the busiest railway station under the division.
Confirming this development, spokesperson of Chakradharpur railway division Bhaskar (he uses only this name) said Tatanagar would be the first station under Chakradharpur division to get the luggage scanner.
"The scanner would be installed at the entry point of Tatanagar station and used only during a security alert," he said adding that the sophisticated device would cost around Rs 35 lakh.
A source from Railway Protection Force (RPF) also told this paper that they would further beef up CCTV coverage at Tatanagar by installing 20 more cameras at various strategic locations of the station.
"Currently, there are 30-odd CCTV cameras in working condition. We have proposed to install 20 more, which is expected to be complete in another one month," an RPF officer told the paper, requesting anonymity.
Tatanagar's vulnerability comes from the fact that many Naxalite incidents have taken place in the vulnerable Chakradharpur railway division area. Many high-profile trains including Rajdhani and Duronto Express cross Tatanagar.
Tatanagar station manager H.K. Balmuchu welcomed the move to install a baggage scanning machine.
"Tatanagar is an important station as it falls in key railway routes of the country. Its security apparatus cannot be ignored. Baggage scanners are also available in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and several other big stations across the country," he said.
