There was none of the usual frenzy associated with ranks when students poured into cyber cafes or logged into home computers to know the JEE Main results on Tuesday. Instead, all were eager to know their total marks that determined their eligibility for JEE Advanced, the gateway to the IITs, under the new combined entrance test.

A total of 13 lakh students had taken the test from across the country this year. Those who have been able to meet the cut-offs of 113 for general, 71 for OBC and 51 for SC/ST will be able to take the advanced test scheduled on June 2.

From Ranchi, around 22,132 students had appeared for the competitive examination that was held on April 7 and roughly 1,000 have been able to clear the first round. The number is likely to swell, as many coaching centres are yet to complete compiling the list of successful examinees.

About 9,000 candidates had appeared for JEE Main from steel city Jamshedpur and more than 1,000 cracked it. In Bokaro, around 600 of 10,000 candidates have qualified for JEE Advanced.

The results were initially supposed to come out on the Internet around 7am but got delayed. Finally, when it was declared in the afternoon, the examinees found out that the scorecard mentioned their total marks out of 360 and whether they were eligible for JEE Advanced. No marks break-ups were given for physics, chemistry and maths.

“Honestly, when I logged into the computer today to check my result, I didn’t get any goosebump as I was not bothered about rank. It was all about marks and whether we have been eligible for the main test,” said Saurabh Suman, who has cleared JEE Mains.

“I think ranks were not important as when you logged in, the page clearly mentioned whether you are eligible or not. That was a clear message for one to register for JEE Advanced,” said Kumar Sambhav, a student of Loyola School in Jamshedpur.

From Ranchi-based FIITJEE, as many as 310 students have qualified for the advanced test.

“For a small city like Ranchi, it’s a matter of great pride to have registered their presence in the advanced test list. We are happy that our students have once again put up a great show,” said Rajesh Kumar Karn, centre co-ordinator.

In Bokaro, DPS flaunted the lion’s share of successful students. School authorities said around 124 students were able to clear the first hurdle. From Chinamya School, over 100 students made it.

To appear in JEE Advanced, all eligible candidates have to register online at jeeadvonline.iitd.ac.in or jeeadv.iitd.ac.in between May 8 and May 13, 2013.
