Ranchi, Nov. 25 : Advocates and Chhotanagpur Law College teachers today organised a free legal aid clinic at the institute to counsel the poor.
The programme was conceived in the light of several legal aid camps the high court had organised under the aegis of the High Court Legal Aid Clinic.
Pankaj Chatturvedi, a senior professor in the law college, discussed criminal cases and their possible solutions with litigants who had been arraigned in cases but have not got justice.
Nandita Adhikari, another law teacher, explained to the litigants their rights and how to enforce the same through the court of law.
High court practitioner Lalit Kumar Lal gave tips on civil cases to the participants.
A sizeable number of people attended the camp and termed it a “boon”, as they could not have got the free counsel otherwise.
A litigant, who participated in the event, said: “The camp is a success and a boon for the poor people. There are many people who cannot afford the hefty fees charged by advocates and they suffer because of that reason. Further, they do not know how to go about with their cases,” he said.
Chhotanagpur Law College principal S. Walia said another idea behind organising the camp was to give an exposure to the students.
“Senior students of the college got a first-hand opportunity to deal with cases. They not only learn about the cases but also benefit from the advice given by advocates and other seniors by attending such camps. This helps them understand the techniques of assessing cases and planning a line of action,” Walia added.
