After Chhau, Kathak lessons for capital kids

Ranchi, June 15: Close on the heels of a workshop on Chhau dance, youths of Ranchi will have the opportunity to learn the nuances of Kathak.

Maestro Pandit Munna Lal Shukla of the Lucknow gharana will conduct a 10-day workshop. The workshop organised by the city-based dance school, Dharitri Kala Kendra, will begin on June 24. It is being organised in association with the Sangeet Natak Akademi and Kathak Kendra of Delhi.

“The workshop will be held in two shifts, from 7 to 10 am and from 4 pm to 8 pm. The venue of the workshop will be Ispat Club,” Dharitri Kala Kendra director Manju Malkani said.“We have received applications from 70 students for the workshop. However, we will restrict this number to 25 students so that the teacher can devote sufficient time to each participant,” Malkani added. She said the students would be selected through screening. “The candidate should have the basic understanding of laya and taal.

Shukla has learnt Kathak from the Shambhu Maharaj, late Achchan Maharaj and his maternal uncle Pandit Birju Maharaj.
