Jamshedpur: Three steel city climbers will try their luck at the selection trials for two upcoming Asian sport climbing competitions.
Siblings Aman (15) and Anisha Verma (14) will attend the trials for the Asian Youth Sport Climbing Championship while Armita Dey (12) will try for a spot in the Indian squad for the Asian Kids Sport Climbing Championship.
Both the selection trials, to be conducted by Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF), will be held in New Delhi in October. While the Asian youth event will be held in China in November, the Asian kids fixture is scheduled in Thailand in December.
Aman was part of the national squad for the Asian Kids Sport Climbing Championship held in Singapore in December last year. Jamshedpur-based Talim Ansari is the other international climber who has represented the country at the Asian Youth Meet in Tehran, Iran, in September 2016.
Aman, Anisha and Armita are busy preparing at a cradle run by Tata Steel Steel Adventure Foundation at JRD Tata Sports Complex here. They are being trained by route setter Bibhas Roy.
Roy, who hails from Calcutta and is with the premier adventure outfit for over three years now, said his wards were picked for the selection trials on the basis of their performance at national competitions.
Aman claimed three yellow metals in lead, speed and bouldering sections at the national meet in Indore last year while Anisha slotted home gold at the national lead climbing event in Srinagar. She also bagged the top slot (in speed climbing) at the open national competition here in May. Armita, on the other hand, picked the speed gold at the competition in Jamshedpur.
Roy said his wards were in good form and preparing hard for the selection trials. "All three have a positive chance of getting selected in the national squad. I am focusing more on climbing techniques for keeping Aman, Anisha and Armita in good stead ahead of the trials," the experienced route setter said.
