Ranchi, May 23: The capital in bleeding. A spurt in the number of crime-related incidents in the past three months have sent police of the capital into a tizzy.
Though the police claim to be on their toes ready to face any kind of situation, they too admit that that crime in Ranchi has bounced back in a big way.
The last few months have been difficult for the police. March saw one of the most inhuman and tragic incidents taking place in the capital.
On March 18, a youth was burnt alive near Distillery Bridge under the Sadar police station area.
The victim was later identified as Abhay Ratan Jha, a youth from Bihar, who was working as a security guard in one of the buildings under construction near Kokar.
After a police investigation it was found that he was murdered due to a love affair. An official of the Sadar police station said, “The investigations are still going on. We have interrogated many people in this regard. But, till late, we have not been able to make any major breakthrough. But investigations are on.”
March also saw the brutal murder of newspaper hawker Upendra Verma at a building under construction in Bhawanagar under the Sadarpolice station area.
A father of seven children, Verma was taking a nap at his house when some people called him. He was taken to the building site and left with his throat slit.
The police said it was a case of enmity. The case is yet to be solved.
Around five armed miscreants barged into the office and looted the Piska More branch of Sahara India recently.
The Distillery Bridge was in the eye of storm again when another case was reported from the same area in April when a 15-year old girl was kidnapped but timely intervention saved the situation.
The girl was returning home with her uncles at night. A group of youth beat up one of her uncles and dragged the girl to a secluded place where they tried to molest her. But timely intervention saved her.
The police again arrested four youths but they were released the following day after the girl gave them a clean chit.
The police have not been able to arrest the real culprits till now. April saw the recovery of four live bombs from a shop next to the Vidhan Sabha under the Jagannath police station area. The police arrested one Sanjay Singh, the owner.
Though the owner said his motive was not to create any disturbances on the Vidhan Sabha campus, the police believed that his motive was to hurl the bombs in the building.
The police also said he had a criminal record.
The Sadar police later arrested two persons who were alleged to be the members of an interstate vehicle-lifting gang operating in Utter Pradesh, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.
