Shillong, April 11: Congress leader Wansuk Syiem was today formally declared elected to the Rajya Sabha to fill in the vacancy caused by the resignation of Thomas A. Sangma.
Meghalaya Assembly secretary H. Mylliemngap, who is also the returning Officer for the election, handed Syiem the certificate 4pm. Today was also the last date for withdrawal of candidature.
Syiem was the lone candidate for the byelection to the Rajya Sabha.
A jubilant Syiem, who will be the first woman from the state to represent Meghalaya in the Rajya Sabha, said the date of her oath-taking ceremony was yet to be fixed.
The former National Commission for Women member will have to serve only the remainder of Sangma's term which is till April 12, 2014.
Before the expiry of the term, a fresh election will have to be conducted.
