Bangalore: Actress Sunny Leone on Tuesday announced her decision to pull out of a New Year's Eve show here in the aftermath of police's refusal to grant permission to the programme in view of threats of protests.

"Since the police of Bangalore have publicly said that they will not be able to ensure mine & all who attend safety for my New Years event, my team & I feel, safety of the people should always come first therefore I cannot attend. God bless & I wish everyone a safe & happy New Year!" Sunny, who has 2.97 million followers on Twitter, tweeted.

"To all those who protested and to all those who supported, always remember, never allow others to speak and choose for you. Have your own voice and make your own choices. You are the youth and you are the NEW INDIA! Stand Proud and Stand together. I love you all dearly!" she added.

The event, Sunny Night, ran into trouble when activists of the Kannada Rakshana Vedike Yuva Sene, the youth wing of the Kannada Rakshana Vedike that claims to be the custodian of Kannada culture, protested and threatened mass suicides if the government allowed the show.

Their objection was based on Sunny's adult entertainment industry background and how it would "spoil" Kannada culture. On Friday, Sene activists burnt Sunny's pictures, protesting the actress's possible choice of clothes and dance numbers.

Harish questioned how they could guess Sunny's attire when even he, as the event's organiser, had no idea what she would wear.

"This is a ticketed show like every other New Year's Eve programme where lots of actors and dancers would be performing So I can't understand such objections against an actor dancing to some popular tunes," he said.

The show, which was to be held in an auditorium on the Manyata Tech Park campus, was to be organised by the city-based event management company, The Time Creations.

The MD of The Time Creations, Harish M.S., said Bangalore police communicated with him 19 days after he applied for permission. "At 7.25pm this (Tuesday) evening, I received a note delivered by a policeman. This should have arrived within days of the applications for security clearance I filed on December 1," said Harish. He has filed a plea before the high court, which will hear the case on Thursday.

"I have already invested Rs 1.8 crore of borrowed money and my own savings for the inaugural event of my company. If it fails to happen, I stand to lose all of them," Harish said."Nobody had any issues when Sunny acted in Kannada movies or visited Bangalore earlier. In my event, she would be dancing to some Bollywood and Kannada songs as part of the New Year's Eve programme," he said.
