Patna, July 7 :
A sensational suicide pact by a former beauty queen and a ruling RJD youth wing leader inside a car at the latter?s family garage has sent shock waves in the state capital.
In a throwback to a Delhi murder last year involving a couple working for a private media channel, both Shilpi Jain, a former ?Miss Patna,? and her friend Gautam Singh were found dead inside a Maruti that Gautam had hired from his friend. Their bodies were recovered on Saturday.
According to the police, the couple modelled their suicide pact on the Delhi incident in which two private media channel employees were were found dead under similar circumstances.
Shilpi and Gautam were depressed because Shilpi?s family opposed her marriage to the Bhumihar youth, son of a London-based doctor. Sources said Shilpi?s businessman father resented Gautam?s political ambitions. Despite his clout in the ruling RJD, Gautam did not want to hurt the sentiments of Shilpi?s parents by eloping and bringing a ?bad name? to the family.
On Friday, Gautam hired a Maruti from his friend and picked up Shilpi from her computer institute. The couple subsequently visited their friends and stayed over till late in the evening lamenting that there was no future for them. Gautam also called up some of his friends from his cell-phone, which was found lying next to the bodies.
Sources said the couple had tied the knot secretly and wanted to consummate their marriage.
?The night must have been difficult for them and they decided to sever ties with the world,? said one of Gautam?s friend. Five hours later, the couple was found dead inside their car.
Shilpi, who had left home in a salwar-kameez was clad in a T-shirt at the time of death and Gautam was naked. There was a small pot of vermilion beside them. Medical examination revealed that Shilpi had sex before killing herself. But the police are not yet sure if her partner was Gautam. Her body bore no marks of injury.
Breaking nearly a week of silence, Shilpi?s parents today alleged that she was murdered. Gautam?s parents stayed away from the limelight and mudslinging.
Political parties have been quick to cash in on the incident. Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Sushil Modi accused the chief minister?s relatives of being involved in the incident. He alleged that the police were trying to hush up the case. The local media has pointed out some loopholes in the police theory. The garage, according to reports in local dailies, was locked from inside but its key was missing.
So it was not possible for the police or anyone else outside to know that the couple was dead. Reports suggested that only someone with prior information could have informed the police. The media also questioned the presence of politicians at the spot. City superintendent of police M.S. Bhatia said only a viscera report would be able confirm the exact mode of suicide though it was apparent that they had either died of poisoning or from an overdose of sleeping pills.
