Calcutta, Aug. 5 :
Over 300 members of the Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee, a forum of sex workers, gheraoed the Bangladesh deputy high commission this afternoon when its officials refused to accept a memorandum on the recent firing on their counterparts in Tanbazar off Dhaka.
Senior police officials, including deputy commissioner, south, R. Pachnanda intervened as traffic was dislocated on Circus Avenue. The Bangladeshi officials finally accepted the memorandum. The gherao was lifted at 4.30 pm.
Samanwaya committee members had marched from Sealdah station to the deputy high commissioner?s office to express solidarity with Tanbazar sex workers who had been protesting against a July 30 incident when unknown assailants fired at them. More than 10 sex workers were injured.
The committee, a forum of 40,000 sex workers in West Bengal, has demanded the restoration of the rights of the Tanbazar women and called for a stop to the ?torture and violence? on them.
