Calcutta, Nov. 4 :
When the stage changes, so does the Left?s tune.
Sworn supporters of the Left Front, which whipped up a cacophony over Saraswati vandana in New Delhi last year, became silent lambs at a meet in Bhopal where the same hymn was recited.
A clinching difference was that the Delhi conference was convened by the BJP-led government and the Bhopal meet in October by a college teachers? federation dominated by the CPI and the CPM.
In sharp contrast to the Delhi meet where West Bengal minister Kanti Biswas led a states? rebellion and threatened a walkout if Saraswati vandana was recited, Left-leaning teachers at the biennial conference of the All-India Federation of University and College Teachers? Organisations (Aifucto) ?took part in the vandana silently and unhesitatingly?, some delegates said.
Surprising, teachers belonging to Left unions ? several were from West Bengal ? did not support delegates from Andhra Pradesh and Haryana who wanted the vandana issue to be discussed.
?It is true we did not object to the vandana. But I will not say all of us liked it, even though the quality of the programme was extremely good. We were totally unaware that such a programme would take place,? said Anil Bhattacharya, a delegate and CPM candidate for the Dum Dum seat in the last Lok Sabha elections.
Bhattacharya, also the general secretary of the CPM-dominated West Bengal College and University Teachers? Association (WBCUTA), has been elected vice-president of Aifucto.
?The whole thing happened all of a sudden. We kept quiet because we did not want to create a scene. There were many major issues related to teachers? problems that had to be discussed on that day?s agenda,? said Swapan Pramanik, leader of the CPM-dominated Calcutta University Teachers? Association.
