New Delhi, March 27: The Supreme Court today dismissed a firm's petition for a directive to the Centre to allow deposits of demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes worth Rs 10 crore before March 31.

Ranu Enterprises claimed it was a "non performing assets (NPA)" company - meaning it had not repaid bank loans - but could not deposit the money because of unavoidable circumstances before the December 30, 2016, deadline fixed by the Centre.

"You say you are a NPA company but you have Rs 10 crore in your pocket?" a bench of Chief Justice J.S. Khehar and Justices D.Y. Chandrachud and Sanjay Kishan Kaul asked the firm's advocate, Manali Singhal.

The court said if there was a genuine reason such as hospitalisation of a person, or inability to deposit because of a trip abroad, it could have considered the plea, but not this case.
