Calcutta, June 9 :
Alarmed at the rise in railway crime, the administration today cautioned officers-in-charge of the government railway police and criticised them for neglecting supervision as most arrested criminals get bail in a day.
A senior officer, on condition of anonymity, said a court recently censured railway police officers for failing to produce adequate information pertaining to the type of crime of the accused and the place of arrest.
According to statistics available with the railway police, there have been six incidents of dacoity between June 3 and June 6 in the Sealdah and Howrah division. Director-general of police Deepak Sanyal today summoned the superintendents of railway police and senior police officials to his chamber to find out the reason behind matters not improving.
One passenger was killed and 25 were injured when criminals opened fire while escaping. The driver of a suburban local train was assaulted by passengers suspecting that he deliberately slowed the train to help the criminals.
The superintendents of railway police have issued a highly confidential office memo to the officers-in-charge, cautioning them about poor supervision. The note warned that stern action would be taken against the officers if they were found to be ?slack in future?.
Police are also reluctant to register cases at the stations. Only 150 cases were recorded at Sealdah GRP station this year. The GRP station at Naihati, which is considered ?extremely crime prone?, has recorded only 15 cases this year.
Police said Subhas Majumdar of Hooghly and Sittu Sheikh of Kaliachak are suspected to be behind the series of recent train dacoities.
