Calcutta, Sept 30 (Agencies): The prime accused in the 2012 Park Street gang-rape case, Kadir Khan, has been arrested by Calcutta Police from Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad district, over four years after he went into hiding.

A special team of Calcutta Police arrested Kadir and an accomplice, Ali Khan, in a joint operation with Delhi Police from their hideout in an apartment in Ghaziabad on Thursday night.

The two are likely to be produced at a court here on Saturday.

The victim, a mother of two, was gang-raped on February 6, 2012, by five men who had offered to drop her home from a nightclub at city's Park Street area.

The case made headlines again when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee initially dismissed it as a “sajano ghatona” or fabricated incident.

Kadir had been absconding, and may have gone to Bangladesh. Acting on a tip-off that he had come back to the country, police began tracking calls made to his family members, and zeroed in on one particular caller.

After he was located somewhere near New Delhi, police started closing in.

”We had information that Khan has returned to the country and was having regular interaction with his family members in Kolkata over phone. We started tracking their numbers and found that calls from a particular number from Ghaziabad were made... We started tracking it and found that it was Kader's,” the officer said.

Police chief Rajeev Kumar formed a special team to nab Kader.

Sources said Kadir was hiding in Bangladesh and after running out of cash he returned to Delhi through Nepal.

The victim pursued the case doggedly but succumbed to an infection of the brain in March last year, at the age of 40.
