Calcutta, Nov 19 :
A police team on Friday went
to arrest Trinamul Congress leader Madan Mitra from his Bhowanipore home but returned when it did not find him there.
Mitra, who is also president of the Progressive Taximen?s Union, had violated traffic rules on Chowringhee Road yesterday and assaulted a police constable for registering a complaint. The constable, Asit Banerjee, lodged an FIR at the Taltolla police station.
The Taltolla police said Mitra was ?absconding?. ?We are looking for him and he will be arrested,? joint commissioner of police V.V. Thambi added.
But when contacted late tonight, Mitra was addressing a public meeting at Sodepur to mark the birth anniversary of Indira Gandhi.
?Why should I be absconding? What wrong have I done?? asked the Trinamul leader who was in the news after a girl
died at a malaria camp he organised in south Calcutta. ?In any case, I was in my office throughout the day. No policeman came there.?
His own party, however, is taking a serious view of the incident. Trinamul spokesman Jayanta Bhattacharya said: ?He has tarnished the image of the party. We will seek an explanation and take up the matter
with party president Mamata Banerjee.?
Undeterred, Mitra warned: ?If action is taken against me, it will be unjustified as I have not assaulted any policemen. If the police try to haul me up, they will have to face the consequences.?
?It was the traffic constable who was at fault,? the Trinamul leader insisted.
?I was going to my office when I was stopped by a constable for allegedly violating traffic norms. But as I had not flouted any traffic rules, I got very angry and screamed at the constable. A heated exchange followed, after which I drove away. No one was assaulted,? Mitra added.
The police, however, said they have witnesses to prove their case.
?We also have the medical report of the constable which clearly shows that he had marks of injury,? an officer said.
Constable Banerjee was sent to the SSKM hospital for a medical checkup after
the incident. Sources said Mitra may seek anticipatory bail in case the police persist with their efforts to arrest him.
However, there was also the possibility of reaching an ?understanding? with the police.
A spokesman for the Calcutta Police Association said they had read about the assault in newspapers but would not comment on it as they did not know whether Banerjee belonged to their union.
