Chandigarh, Sept. 24: Akali Dal leader Paramjit Singh and his son, Gurjit, accused of assaulting a nurse at a private hospital in Moga, were arrested this morning from a bus stand in Baghapurana town.

The arrests came a day after the BJP, the junior ally in the Akali Dal-led Punjab government, called for immediate action in the case.

Paramjit's wife Daljit Kaur is the sarpanch of Alamwala village.

The accused duo have been booked under penal code sections 451 (house trespass to commit offence), 323 (causing hurt voluntarily) and 34 (common intent in crime).

On Thursday morning, the father and son, also an Akali supporter, had come to the hospital to clear a patient's dues. Asked to wait for 10 minutes, they first abused a doctor and then abused and assaulted the nurse, who is pregnant.

Raids had been on since last night to nab the two as it became apparent that the case could turn into a political controversy after the BJP demanded justice for the nurse.

"We received a tip-off that the two had been seen around the bus stand area. Two teams rushed to the spot and arrested them," said Jaspal Singh, the deputy superintendent of police (Baghapurana).

State education minister Daljit Singh Cheema said the government would recommend strict action against the culprits.
