Car firm stick

New Delhi, July 9 (PTI): A consumer forum has directed the Indian arm of Nissan Motors to either replace a defective car sold to a doctor or refund its cost.

The forum said Dr Neera Bhan was in “constant danger” of getting hurt because of the car’s defective braking system, which did not work properly despite a complete replacement. The forum also directed the firm to pay Rs 50,000 to the Delhi resident.

Duty evasion

New Delhi (PTI): The revenue department has detected excise duty evasion worth over Rs 100 crore during searches carried out on the premises of cigarette manufacturers in different states. The searches resulted in the discovery of huge quantity of cigarettes that were being sold by evading excise duty.

Ethnic Indian

Kuala Lumpur (PTI): Malaysia home minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has assured that any policemen found responsible for the custodial death of a 42-year-old ethnic Indian will be punished. Police had earlier claimed that P. Karuna Nithi had not died of torture.

VK Singh row

New Delhi (PTI): The Armed Forces Tribunal has pulled up General (retired) V.K. Singh for “showing favour” and “without jurisdiction” reviewing an order to promote Brigadier Ajay Singh Panwar of to his unit to the rank of major general in 2011 when he was the army chief.

Japan royals

Tokyo (PTI): Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko will visit India for about a week from November 30 to celebrate 60 years of diplomatic ties between the two countries. The trip will be the couple’s first since Akihito’s ascension to the throne in 1989. The couple are expected to visit Delhi and Chennai.

Tiller fine

Thane (PTI): A consumer forum has directed an agricultural machine firm to pay Rs 50,000 to a farmer for supplying him a defective power tiller under a government scheme. The forum directed the firm to replace Yeshwant Laxman Jadhav’s tiller for free and pay him the compensation.

School fee order

Mumbai, July 9 (PTI): The government has no control over fees charged by private unaided schools, Bombay High Court has said.

The court set aside a Mahasrashtra education department order asking Mumbai’s Diamond Jubilee High School to refund fees collected over five years to some students as it didn’t get affiliation to the ICSE. It said the right to establish an educational institution was guaranteed by the Constitution and only a law, not an executive order, can restrict it.

LoC killings

Srinagar: The Indian Army has killed five militants along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara. The five were part of a larger group of eight to nine trying to cross over. Officials described it as “this year’s biggest infiltration bid”.

Nirupam suit

New Delhi (PTI): Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam has moved Delhi High Court challenging summons in a defamation complaint filed by BJP MP Smriti Irani. Nirupam had allegedly questioned Irani’s credentials as an actress to analyse poll results during a TV debate in December 2012.

Hospital plan

Bangalore (PTI): The Karnataka government intends to open superspeciality hospitals in Mysore, Gulbarga and Belgaum and kidney dialysis units in every district hospital, medical education minister Sharan Prakash Patil said on Tuesday.

Sleaze case

Kochi (PTI): Kerala High Court has stayed all further proceedings against former Left Democratic Front minister Jose Thettayil in a sexual harassment case. It said prima facie no offence was made against the JD-S legislator. The court said the complainant would be summoned on Thursday. Thettayil’s son Adarsh is also named in the case.

Azam mother

Rampur (PTI): Uttar Pradesh minister Mohammad Azam Khan’s mother, Ameer Jahan, died on Tuesday morning. She was 92. Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav and chief minister Akhilesh Yadav sent condolences.

JMM govt claim

Ranchi, July 9: JMM leader Hemant Soren today staked claim to form the next government in Jharkhand, telling governor Syed Ahmed that he had the support of 43 MLAs in a House of 82.

requested the governor, whom he met along with father Shibu Soren, that he be sworn in tomorrow. “President’s rule in Jharkhand is going to end. I expect support across party lines,” he said.

HP ropeway

Dharamsala (PTI): The Himachal Pradesh government has agreed to build a ropeway to the shrine of Himani Chamunda in Kangra district, sources said.

Correction

A version of the report headlined ‘Diabetes combo pills spark worry’, published on Tuesday July 9, had interchanged the timings that two drugs should be taken. The corrected version of paragraph 7 in the story should read: “Metformin should be taken with or after a meal, Thomas said, and drugs from another class of compounds after food.” We apologise for the mistake.

Loan default

New Delhi, July 9 (PTI): Banks have decided to “name and shame” guarantors for loan defaulters by publishing their photographs and other details in newspapers, and on notice boards of their branches and at community centres.

The decision is aimed at building pressure on borrowers to clear their dues. Public sector banks are at the forefront of taking such measures. The public notices issued by private banks now do not contain pictures of loan defaulters or their guarantors.

Collapse toll

Hyderabad (PTI): The toll in the collapse of a restaurant building at Secunderabad has gone up to 17. Two injured persons were rescued till late on Monday evening from the debris of City Lights restaurant building.

Raj FIR

New Delhi (PTI): A local court has issued a bailable warrant against an investigating officer of Delhi police for failing to tell the court about the progress of a probe against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray. An FIR was registered against Raj in 2012 for allegedly making derogatory comments against people from Bihar.

Youth dies

Mirzapur (PTI): A Dalit youth allegedly committed suicide in police custody on Monday night. The 24-year-old allegedly consumed poison in the bathroom. A murder case has been registered against two policemen.

Girl suicide

Hyderabad (PTI): A software engineer from Bangalore allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the seventh floor of a multinational company building in Hyderabad on Tuesday, police said. A suicide note found near 22-year-old Ashwini Nair’s body purportedly stated that she wants to end her life and no one was responsible for it.

Land cuffs

Faridabad (PTI): Three persons have been arrested for allegedly encroaching on land belonging to the Indian Air Force in Uttar Pradesh’s Faridabad district, police said. The trio were allegedly found building huts on the air force land on Monday.
