Admission order

New Delhi, Aug. 4 (PTI): The Supreme Court today said counselling for admission in professional colleges like engineering and medical in Andhra and Telangana will continue in August.

It observed that students should not suffer because of the state’s bifurcation. The last date for completion of counselling has been July 31 every year. The court will hear Telangana’s plea seeking extension till October 31 for completing the admission process on the next date of hearing on August 11.

Babu assets

New Delhi (PTI): The Centre has asked states to ensure that all IAS, IPS and IFoS officers working under its jurisdiction file their revised annual property report by September 15. Such details are mandatory under the revised Lokpal rules.

Plane check

New Delhi (PTI): The civil aviation authority grounded 14 aircraft this year following surprise checks, the Lok Sabha has been informed. Union minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju Pusapati said the directorate-general of civil aviation conducted 55 surveillance drives till June.

Landslide toll

Mumbai: The death toll in the landslide at Pune’s Malin village rose to 132 on Monday with 29 more bodies being pulled out from the debris. Sixteen houses adjacent to the landslide affected area have been evacuated following warning from the Geological Survey of India.

Mumbai lake

Mumbai (PTI): Tansa lake, which accounts for nearly 12 per cent of Mumbai’s water supply, has started overflowing following heavy rain in the catchment area, officials said. However, the official added that it would take some more weeks before the civic body revokes its decision to impose a 10 per cent water cut in the city.

Collapse data

Chennai (PTI): Madras High Court has directed state advocate-general A.L. Somayaji to file a status report with regard to the recent collapse of an under construction building in Porur in which 61 people died. Somayaji has been asked to submit the report on June 28.

Summons caution

New Delhi, Aug. 4 (PTI): Summoning a person to face criminal trial affects the fundamental right to liberty and the court should “carefully” scrutinise the complaint before passing such an order, a Delhi court has observed.

The court was hearing a revision petition filed by three Delhi residents challenging the summons of a lower court. A lady, said to be a tenant of the trio, had filed a false case against them to evade rent, the petition claimed.

Forest policy

New Delhi (PTI): The Supreme Court has asked the Centre to inform it about the steps taken to appoint a national regulator to oversee the implementation of forest policy. A forest bench, headed by Justice J.S. Kehar, posted the matter for September 15.

Labour plan

New Delhi (PTI): The Centre has taken a series of initiatives to make health care provisions for workers more “effective and consumer responsive”. The steps include convergence of three main social security schemes on a single smart card for the unorganised sector, the labour minister Narendra Singh Tomar has said.

Builder fined

New Delhi (PTI): A consumer forum has asked a real estate firm to pay Rs 5.8 lakh to a woman who had been allotted a shop but the allotment was cancelled and over Rs 6.5 lakh forfeited because of non-availability of bank loan.

E-rickshaws

New Delhi (PTI): Delhi High Court has agreed to hear a plea seeking review of its earlier order banning e-rickshaws in the capital. While the court agreed to hear the matter, it also observed that there was a need to regulate the plying of e-rickshaws.

Airport bar

Kochi (PTI): Visitors, including relatives of the passengers, will not be allowed inside the terminals of Kochi airport from August 5 to 20 as part of security measures for Independence Day. Passengers will have to reach the airport early as stringent security checks would be in force, an official release said.

Girl free to wed: SC

New Delhi, Aug. 4 (PTI): The Supreme Court today released a 19-year-old girl who married against the wishes of her family from a women’s home in Jaipur, saying she was at liberty to choose her way.

The court allowed the girl’s release from Jaipur’s Nari Niketan after being satisfied with the documents that suggested she was not a minor as claimed by her parents. The age claim had formed the basis for Rajasthan High Court to send her to Nari Niketan.

Baggage fine

New Delhi (PTI): A Delhi consumer forum has directed Air India to pay Rs 15,000 to a flier for loss of his baggage during a flight from Calcutta to Delhi in 2010, saying it was deficient in rendering services to Subhash Chander Moton.

Khanna will

Mumbai (PTI): Bombay High Court has admitted an appeal filed by Twinkle Khanna, daughter of late actor Rajesh Khanna, against a single judge’s order asking her to give a copy of her father’s will to his former companion Anita Advani. The court stayed the order until Twinkle’s appeal was disposed of.

Toilet woes

New Delhi (PTI): Around 60 per cent of people in the world defecating in the open live in India, a joint report published by the WHO and the Unicef has estimated. The Centre ensures sanitation facilities in rural areas through Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan scheme.

Bear cubs

Itanagar (PTI): Six Asiatic black bear cubs, hand-reared by International Fund for Animal Welfare-Wildlife Trust of India team, have been released into the Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary of Arunachal Pradesh. Two of the cubs are radio-collared to facilitate monitoring, an official said.

Students held

Erode (PTI): Seventeen students of a college in Tamil Nadu’s Erode were arrested on Monday for allegedly breaking open the gate and entering its premises. Police said the authorities had closed the college about 10 days ago following protests by students demanding the conversion of the aided institution into a government arts college.
