Imphal, April 24: The Manipur government has sought a report from Ukhrul district administration on a reported incursion by Myanmarese military in its territory.

Chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh sought details of the incident following reports that military personnel of the neighbouring country had entered Choro Khunou, a border village in Ukhrul district, a few days back, dismantled some houses and told the villagers before leaving that the land belonged to Myanmar, an official said.

"We will know the details of the incident at Choro Khunou only after a report from the district administration is received," the official said.

Sources said an official team, including police officers, from Ukhrul town left for the tribal village yesterday to probe the incursion report. The village is about 150km from Ukhrul town and 230km from Imphal.

Manipur's three districts of Churachandpur, Chandel and Ukhrul share more than 350km-long border with Myanmar and there have been reports of such incursions by the Myanmarese military in the past too.

In 2013, Ibobi Singh had constituted an all-political party committee to examine reports of an incursion by the Myanmarese military into Hollenphai village in Chandel district, about 110km from Imphal.

Besides, the Myanmar authorities have been asking India to stop construction of an integrated checkpost at Manipur's border township of Moreh, 109km from Imphal, saying the site is on Myanmar's territory.

The Surveyor General of India had sent a team to Manipur in December 2013 to gather a first-hand account of the dispute at Hollenphai and Moreh.

The fresh incursion report comes at a time when people of Manipur have been demanding a survey of Manipur-Myanmar border to solve all border disputes once and for all.

"Both the state government and the Centre have been neglecting Manipur's border with Myanmar. It is because of this neglect that Myanmarese military frequently enters the state's territory and claims Manipur's land," Rajendro Nongthombam, president of Information Centre for Hill Areas of Manipur, a citizens' organisation, said.

The organisation is trying to highlight the problems faced by people living in the interior areas as well as incursions by the Myanmarese military.

"We will collect a detailed report on the fresh attempt and will launch a public movement to mount pressure on the state and the Centre to resolve all border disputes with Myanmar," Rajendro said.

Assam 'trouble'

Police and Jorhat district officials rushed to the Tiru Hills area along the Assam-Nagaland border near Mariani town in the district this evening after receiving reports that some persons from the neighbouring state reportedly set up six to seven huts in "Assam territory" and some armed men were seen by villagers in the area.

Jorhat deputy commissioner Solanki Vishal Vasant said he had lodged a protest to his Mokokchung district counterpart S.K. Patel and asked him remove the huts immediately.

Security personnel have been deployed in the area, he added.
