Mumbai, Sept. 3: Incessant rain lashed Mumbai and its suburbs today, flooding low-lying areas and hitting normal life as waterlogged streets held up peak-hour traffic and submerged tracks delayed suburban train services.

Some flights were delayed, too, sources said. One man died after he accidentally touched a live wire while walking through a flooded street.

The Regional Meteorological Centre has predicted “heavy to very heavy rainfall” in the next 24 hours, indicating that the situation could get worse tomorrow.

Till late this evening, the eastern suburbs had received 111mm of rainfall, while the western suburbs had recorded 159.69mm of rain.

Sources in civic body BMC said the Tansa dam, one of the major dams that supply water to the country’s financial capital, started overflowing since afternoon.

The showers, which continued through the day, also lashed other parts of Maharashtra, including Beed, Osmanabad and Latur in the drought-affected Marathwada region, agency reports said.

In Mumbai, heavy showers in the evening peak hours swamped low-lying areas, delaying train services by 30 minutes to an hour on the Western Railway, Central Railway and Harbour Line routes.

Tracks were submerged at stations like Sion, Chunabhatti, Byculla, Kurla, Ghatkopar.

Officials said some flights were delayed too as the main runway at Mumbai airport was shut for 20 minutes.

Flooding on key stretches disrupted traffic on the Eastern and Western Express Highways, with some motorists reporting nearly two to three-hour delays.

Four persons were reported injured when a portion of a hillock in Chunabhatti collapsed, fire brigade officials said.

The 47-year-old man who died was electrocuted in Amrit Nagar in Ghatkopar in north-east Mumbai.

Among the areas where heavy waterlogging was reported were Lokmanya Nagar, Bhandup (west), LBS Marg, KBS Hegdewar Chowk, Mulund (west), Andheri (west), Sainath subway, Malad (west) and Akash Galli and Pawar Sahakar Mansion at Kurla (west).

Some schools in the suburbs closed early so that students could reach home safe.

Parts of coastal Konkan also received heavy rainfall. In Thane, heavy rain led to waterlogging in places like Vasai, Virar, Palghar, Dahanu and Kalyan.

The showers brought cheer to farmers in the Marathwada region, where Renapur, a tehsil in Beed district, recorded the maximum rainfall of 210mm in the past ten hours.

Incessant rain lashed Latur, too, with Pangaon, Narotewadi and Khalangiri being the worst affected, official sources said.

Good rainfall was recorded in all parts of Aurangabad district.
