The wife of a judge, who was allegedly shot at in a crowded market area in Gurgaon by his personal security guard, succumbed to her injuries on Sunday, officials said.
Mahipal, a Haryana police head constable who had been working as additional sessions judge Krishan Kant’s personal guard for the past two years, shot at Kant’s wife Ritu, 45, and son Dhruv, 18, at the Arcadia market around 3.30pm on Saturday.
They were admitted to Medanta Hospital in critical condition.
Regional medical officer, Gurgaon Civil Hospital, Pawan Choudhary confirmed the death of Ritu and said the post-mortem examination had been conducted.
Her son has been declared brain dead, he added.
Mahipal was brought to a Gurgaon court at 1pm on Sunday. He was sent to four-day police custody.
Gurgaon police had sought a week’s custody for extensive interrogation of Mahipal to establish the reason why he killed Ritu and shot at Dhruv.
“Mahipal is frequently changing his statements and becomes furious whenever he is questioned. He said he was depressed on account of his personal family problem,” a senior police officer said.
Ritu had suffered a bullet injury in her chest and Dhruv in his head.
The police said Mahipal, who was arrested from Faridabad on Saturday, had claimed during interrogation that Kant had denied him leave to go home and that the judge used to scold him regularly.
The police suspect Mahipal could be suffering from depression.
On Saturday, Ritu scolded Mahipal in the car, according to the guard. A video recorded by an eyewitness shows Mahipal holding a gun and trying to push Dhruv into the car as he lay on the road.
Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar said on Sunday that counselling of policemen entrusted with protecting dignitaries will be done.
Speaking on the sidelines of an event in Haryana’s Karnal, Khattar told reporters, “Their (the security personnel’s) counselling will be done... and time to time such counselling should be done.”
