Chennai, Nov. 18 :     Under fire over the Madras Central Jail riot in which an official was burnt alive and 10 prisoners shot dead, Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi today announced an inquiry into the incident. Karunanidhi informed the Assembly that a sitting judge of the Madras High Court would head the probe. He said those responsible for the riot would face legal action, but stressed that no one would be victimised. Law minister Aladi Aruna confirmed that 10 prisoners had died in the shooting, and as many as 95 were injured. Seventy-nine prison and police personnel were also wounded. Aruna blamed prisoners close to Boxer Vadivelu, an inmate who died yesterday, for the riot. ?They were planning a mass escape, but they did not succeed because of timely police intervention,? the minister claimed. Vadivelu?s widow moved the Madras High Court today seeking action against those responsible for her husband?s death. K. Malathy alleged that Vadivelu had been ?done to death? by his ?powerful political enemies?. She accused the jail superintendent of ?callous indifference? towards her husband?s safety. Vadivelu, a notorious don detained under the Goondas Act, was identified with the ADMK. The riot broke out after prisoners heard of Vadivelu?s death in the government hospital early yesterday. Though the authorities maintained that Vadivelu had an attack of dysentery, the jail was abuzz with rumours that he had been done to death. Anxious relatives and friends gathered outside the prison today, seeking permission to meet the inmates. When they were turned down, they squatted on the road for half-an-hour before the jail authorities relented and allowed them inside. The relatives appeared relieved that things were back to normal in the prison. Crowds also milled about in the Government Hospital where the injured are under treatment. The chief minister today announced a solatium of Rs 8 lakh to the family of Jayakumar, the deputy jailor who was burnt alive, and Rs 1 lakh each to the families of the prisoners killed. He also promised financial assistance for treatment of the injured. Fending off charges that the incident was unprecedented, Karunanidhi recalled that 22 communists were shot dead in Salem jail in a 1952 riot. He also mentioned a series of incidents during the Jayalalitha regime. Both Karunanidhi and Aruna firmly turned down the Opposition demand for their resignations. The Tamil Maanila Congress and the ADMK staged a walkout, protesting the government?s handling of the issue. The TMC walked out first, seeking the law minister?s resignation. The ADMK followed, demanding that the chief minister step down. The two parties walked out almost simultaneously for the first time since the 1996 Assembly polls, which could be an indication of things to come, observers said. ADMK leader Jayalalitha has suggested that she would be looking for ?floor-coordination? with the TMC.
