Q: Can you tell us something about the song, Ek lo ek muft, which you have sung in Guru?

This is a very different song and very unlike the previous songs that I have sung in other films. I can only say that it is a very nice and beautiful song. A.R. Rahman has composed it wonderfully.

Q: How happy are you with the outcome of the song?

Oh yes, the song has already become a hit and is quite famous now. Obviously, I am very happy with the outcome. It feels fantastic. The song is on everyone’s lips now. So I am pleased.

Q: How was it working with A. R. Rahman, moreso since you are a veteran music composer yourself?

I don’t mind working under a talented music director though I am a senior composer myself and a very experienced person in this film industry. Whether it is Rahman or Vishal- Shekhar, all of them have shown respect towards me. But basically, I am more than happy for one reason. I have created history of sorts which is possible only in a place like Bollywood. With this song, I have made the record of singing for both, Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan. It’s nice that in this life itself, I have sung for two generations. This makes me feel really very happy. It is a great feeling of achievement.

Q: This song doesn’t have your usual Bengali touch!

Yes, it doesn’t have that touch. In fact, it is a very different song. Even my song, Mumbai nagariya from Taxi No. 9211 had this kind of a feel. I have sung both the songs with lot of energy.

Q: You have been a judge in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’ll Champs. Were you happy with the stint?

Yeah, it was a very nice experience. I just enjoyed being a part of that show as kids loved me and I too loved the kids. The show was really nicely created. The kids enjoyed the show and were happy with me, I am sure. That’s why I enjoyed it a great deal. I hope to do similar shows in future.

Q: You are one of the pioneers of Indipop. How do you feel when other music directors try to recreate the same magic with Hindi pop songs?

Actually, I have no problems with anyone. I am happy for myself as I created good pop music and songs and now the new singers and musicians too are trying to create similar magic. I guess some of them are really good. In fact, I like Alisha Chinai, Bali and many others. They too have made some good songs and hence I have no issues.
