Srinagar, Apr 6 (Agencies): Outstation students of National Institute of Technology here who had clashed last Friday with Kashmiri classmates celebrating India’s defeat in a cricket match told a crisis-control team sent from Delhi that they want action against some NIT officials for their “anti-national” activities.

The outstation students placed this and other demands before the team, sent by the Union ministry of human resource development to defuse the crisis.

The team has Sanjeev Sharma, director of technical education, his deputy Fazal Mehmood, and the chairman of the Board of Governors of NIT, M.J. Zarabi.

The outstation students demanded that they be allowed to hoist the national tricolour at the main gate every day, that the NIT campus be shifted to Jammu and a temple built in the campus.

In Surat, HRD Minister Smriti Irani said she had spoken to Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who assured her that safety of all students will be ensured.

”My officers are in touch with the agitating students and their family members. One or two students said they wanted to go back home for which my ministry is making arrangements,” she said.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh, campaigning in West Bengal for the assembly elections, said that he had spoken to Mehbooba who gave an assurance that all students are safe and she would enquire how the incident happened and fix responsibility.

Tension started brewing on the campus last week when some local students celebrated India’s defeat to West Indies in the World T20 semi final. The outstation students protested, and clashes followed.

The institute was shut down for the weekend. On Monday, the outstation students wanted to go home, citing fears about their security, but the state police manning the gate beat them with canes when they got into an argument with a senior officer and tried to leave the campus.

The government had to bring in the Central Reserve Police Force. The Seema Suraksha Bal was already in the campus since Friday.

A senior NIT official said it is impossible to meet demands like building a temple or a mosque inside an educational institute.

The official said some of the outstation students were using a minor incident to get a transfer to an NIT in their home states.

The outstation students also want that non-local teachers check their examination papers to ensure “equality and transparency”.

As the HRD team arrived here, National Conference leader Omar Abdullah said the matter needs “tactful handling” and the state government should look into it “without back seat drivers”.

”Rushing in a team from HRD ministry coupled with the CRPF replacing J&K police speaks volumes about Delhi's confidence in Mehbooba Mufti,” Omar wrote on Twitter.
