New Delhi, Oct. 29: The Centre today ruled out Special Protection Group (SPG) cover for Narendra Modi, saying the National Security Guard (NSG) provided him adequate security.

Union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said there were no plans to review the BJP prime ministerial candidate’s security. The party had expressed concern about his safety in the aftermath of the Patna blasts on Sunday.

“Modi has got sufficient security, he does not need SPG security,” Shinde told reporters on the sidelines of an NSG event at Haryana’s Manesar.

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy had yesterday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to amend the SPG Act to include the “principal candidates for the post of Prime Minister” in the category of those entitled to get SPG cover.

In June, the NSG had doubled the number of personnel in Modi’s inner ring to 108. They are now deployed in batches of 36 spread over three shifts. Besides protecting him, the personnel also sanitise vehicles used by the Gujarat chief minister.

Under the SPG Act of 1988, the SPG accords “proximate” security to the Prime Minister, former Prime Ministers and their immediate family members.
